From vacuums that buff your floors while you sleep to drones, self-driving cars, and video games, AI is everywhere. Do you trust it? Cutter Consortium contributors Keng Siau and Weiyu Wang recently examined the role of trust in AI, machine learning, and robotics. To set the stage, the authors define trust as either (1) a set of specific beliefs dealing with benevolence, competence, integrity, and predictability, or (2) the willingness of one party to depend on another in a highly risky situation, or (3) a combination of 1 and 2. However, that definition is best applied to human, interpersonal relationships. Trust in a human-technology or human-machine relationship is a little different. In addition to the human characteristics (personality and ability) and environmental characteristics (culture, task, and institutional factors) that impact interpersonal trust, trust in AI, machine learning and robotics are affected by technology characteristics, including performance, process, and purpose. Siau and Weiyu explain: Although human and environmental factors are fairly similar irrespective of trust, the technology characteristics impacting trust will be different for AI, ML, and robotics than they are for other objects or humans. Since AI has many new features companies to other technologies, its performance, process and purpose need to be defined and considered.”
SMuch has been made lately about the so-called rise of the “chief AI officer” in the computer press and other media. But Cutter Consortium’s ongoing study of how organizations are adopting, or planning to adopt, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies reveals that the chief AI officer (or equivalent) is very limited. You can see in the figure below, only 10% of organizations currently have a chief AI officer. The same can be said of future plans for designating a chief AI officer, with nearly 60% of surveyed organizations reporting that they have no foreseeable plan to appoint a chief AI officer (or equivalent). Instead, organizations are opting to share responsibilities for AI adoption among various technical and business leaders. Cutter Consortium Senior Consultant Curt Hall, who has been analyzing the survey results and conducting phone interviews with many of the respondents, offers this insight into the numbers: Some respondents qualified their answers for why their organizations do not have a chief AI officer or equivalent, basically indicating that such a role is shared among multiple people consisting of both IT (e.g., chief data officer) and senior business leaders who are often part of a digital transformation/innovation team, or some other group. Similarly, others say that the role is seen as having a much broader focus than just AI. Consequently, other job titles reflect this trend, a popular one being the ‘chief automation officer,’ who is typically charged with leading various enterprise digitalization efforts.”
